Fresh Noshes N Fresh Thoughts

Temple Aliyah Religious School is conducting a fundraiser with a program called Farm Fresh To You. In a nutshell, you sign up online to have fresh, organic, locally grown produce delivered right to your door. They have many different packages to select from, and an elaborate list of fruits and vegetables that you can peruse and choose what you would like to include and exclude from your shipments each week. Just for signing up for 1 delivery, Temple Aliyah will receive $15. You can arrange for weekly, biweekly, or monthly deliveries to your home or office. There is no obligation, you may cancel whenever you wish.

What if you don't like vegetables? Shame on you! You can order only fruit or only vegetables, or a combination.

You say you have never even heard of something like this? Check out the website, Google CSA, pick up the food section of the paper. This is all the rage in the food world right now. Everyone is trying to "Go Green," and this is a giant step in that direction.

Please visit the website, http://www.farmfreshtoyou.com/, to learn more and sign up. The Promo Code is 7794.

We have created this blog for the Aliyah Community to share experiences with this program. Recipes, thoughts and related issues and concerns are all welcome here.

If this is your first time even considering purchasing produce somewhere other than the grocery store, it is an easy way to learn about locally sourced produce, and looking outside the box to make a difference in our world. On the surface, this is a fundraiser for our religious school. But take a step back and look. If almost 1000 families purchase produce through a program such as this, think how much gas is saved in transporting fruits and vegetables across the world to land in your kitchen. Look how simple it is to increase the quality and variety of the foods you are serving to your family. You are helping the farmers in your own state support themselves. And this is a great state to live in if you are looking for a huge variety of produce year round!

I have received my first shipment this week. I ordered the valley box, which contained a variety of green leafy vegetables that I was not familiar with. The grapes included were divine, as were the citrus fruits. Since I enjoy cooking, I went right to my computer to find recipes and consulted friends for ideas for the items that I did not know what to do with. I will fill you in on what I made the next time I post, but suffice it to say, I am looking forward to my next shipment!

  1. Wendy is right - there is a growing movement of Jews concerned with food across the country and also right here is LA.

I signed up and can't wait to receive my first shipment! It feels great to be doing a double mitzvah by supporting Temple Aliyah's Religious School and a local grower.
